Theatre Battery Presents a Battery Powered New Works Reading:

Baby Queens by Sydney Painter
Thursday, July 28th @ 8pm

Three intrepid, gender non-conforming kids attempt to start a drag club at their middle school. Despite systemic opposition, they get their favorite teacher, who may or may not have his own rocky history with drag, on board with their vision. As they take on the challenges both of drag as an art form and of rattling the cage of their unified school district, they learn as much about themselves and their community as they do about eyelash glue and voguing.

Running Time: 60 minutes, with post-reading discussion

Location: Theatre Battery's Adapted stage at Kent Station: 444 Ramsay Way, Suite 107, Kent, WA 98032 (Next to Gentle Dental and a few doors down from Panera Bread)

Please note: We will be operating as a fully-vaccinated company and requiring proof of Covid-19 vaccination for entrance to our spaces. We will be asking audience members to mask.

Sydney Painter thought it was bullsh*t when her theater professors would say, “If you can imagine yourself doing anything else, there’s the door.” But three cities, two heartbreaks, and a dripping fistful of ridiculous hustles later, she’s accepted that she truly is unfit for any lifestyle other than Artiste. After college and a charming interlude in a foreign country, she apprenticed at legendary new play incubator Magic Theatre in San Francisco, dramaturging for some of this century’s most innovative writers. A humorist by birth and a storyteller by training, Sydney will dredge human behavior without judgment and bring humor and compassion to dark, absurd corners. Also, there’s usually always some gender politics and queer theory.
